SEARCH FOR THE
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF PEOPLE, CULTURE, AND FINANCE

COMMONWEALTH

For over two decades, Commonwealth has collaborated with employers, the financial services industry, and other influential actors to prioritize worker and family financial security. Commonwealth’s team recognizes now, more than ever, that its people are absolutely central to its impact and success, and for the first time, has committed to a senior leadership position centered on its people and culture. In this context, Commonwealth seeks an experienced, strategic, energetic, and collaborative leader that is passionate about the organizational mission to serve as its next Senior Vice President of People, Culture, and Finance (SVP).

Commonwealth partners with leading firms and institutions to design, test, incubate, and scale innovations with the potential to sustainably benefit financially underserved people. The organization also works with policymakers and public officials to advance public policies that enable savings and foster financial security for families. Commonwealth’s work has shifted how employers and benefits providers understand their role and responsibility for employee financial security, influenced fintech and bank approaches to saving tools and customer financial wellbeing, and changed how federal, state, and local governments approach the financial needs of their citizens. All told, this work has enabled millions of people to save more than $8 billion for themselves and their children.

The incoming SVP will be responsible for maintaining and further strengthening the organization’s collaborative, kind, and vibrant culture, building overall organizational capacity, and taking the organization’s strong HR capabilities to the next level. Commonwealth’s budget was 5.7M in FY23 and the organization currently has 27 full-time employees supplemented by a half dozen trusted contractors in states including Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, California, Kansas, Indiana, and Maryland. The SVP will be a central part of building the next generation of the organization, centering the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the process. The SVP must also have experience creating an environment where passionate, talented team members can grow and develop over time, ultimately extending the tenure and career development of Commonwealth’s talented staff.

Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with and as a part of the executive team, the incoming SVP will lead the organization’s strong and successful human resources function, including an extraordinarily effective and widely respected senior manager and a small team of skilled external consultants. The SVP will also oversee a small, but experienced and capable team of contractor and staff that support Commonwealth’s finance function. Better anticipating and planning for Commonwealth’s HR needs is a critical goal for this new role, and because salaries are the organization’s largest expense, oversight of the finance function will equip the SVP to have the fullest picture of where the organization is headed. Commonwealth is deeply committed to expanding its critical impact, especially in the context of increasing economic uncertainty, and the SVP will help to support Commonwealth’s strategic vision.
