Assistant Professor – Geographic Information Science

The Department of Geography & Geosciences seeks a broadly-trained Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Geographic Information Science.

Preferred Areas of Specialization: Geographic Information Science

Primary Job Duties: Teach up to 24 credit hours (or equivalent, generally six courses and several labs) per year in support of core and advanced undergraduate courses in GIScience. Examples of courses that the applicant might teach include Introduction to GIS, Cartographic Visualization, Statistical Problem Solving in Geography, Advanced GIS, and the University’s First-Year Seminar. Additionally, the candidate will offer courses in their specific area of expertise. Faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda in an area of specialization, engage undergraduate students in research, challenge undergraduate majors and General Education students with integrated instruction and utilize an effective teaching style that supports a diverse student body.

While this position is primarily focused on undergraduate teaching with a demonstrated ability to support undergraduate research, opportunities exist to contribute to our graduate program in GIS Management, which was recognized with the 2022 AAG Program Excellence Award for Graduate Education. Candidates are invited to join existing externally-funded outreach activities of the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC).

Experience using the Esri suite of GIS products is necessary; the use of open-source GIS software, and Python programming skills, are desired.

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Geography with a concentration in Geographic Information Science or related discipline. If Ph.D. completed by August 15, 2024, would be hired as Assistant Professor. If ABD; would be hired at the rank of Instructor, with the requirement that candidate complete doctoral degree by July 1, 2025.

The Department consists of 15 faculty members with specializations in GIScience, Atmospheric Science, Human Geography, Physical Geography and Geology. The Department offers a B.S. in Earth Science, a B.S. in Geography, and a M.S. in GIS Management.
