Director of Labs
Director of Labs, College of Engineering, Tennessee Tech University.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this job is to lead all lab technical support activities across the college, excluding IT and labs under the control of centers. In doing so they will support both research labs, educational labs, machine shops, student project areas and all related facilities not under the control of research centers. The occupant will also lead efficiency and performance improvement efforts across the college in the areas of technical support.
Essential Functions
Managing resource usage across the college, including personnel, equipment and allocated facilities. Indirectly supervising student workers supporting lab and shop activities throughout the college and directly supervising student workers supporting coordination efforts. Providing general (direct) support to labs including: assisting Faculty and their TAs in the development of laboratory experiments, assisting the shop technicians, research engineers and other staff in supervising student project construction, assisting with computer hardware installation, network questions and upgrades in collaboration with ITS, assisting students with software, and machine tools, maintaining lab and shop equipment, and purchasing student project supplies, computer and shop equipment. The Director is expected to be adaptive to fill gaps that vary over the semester, year, and composition of available lab/shop personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology or a wide breath of training in broad areas of technology (electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, chemical handling, data acquisition, computer/hardware integration) plus financial and safety management with a Bachelor’s degree in a field that provides evidence of team leadership training. At least 5 years
of direct experience in a position similar to that which will report to this position.
Preferred Qualifications
Must have fundamental understanding of most critical areas of need within the college (electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, chemical handling, data acquisition, safety management, financial management) and be willing to obtain training in other areas. Strong competence in at least two. 10 years of experience preferred.
