The Department of Pathology, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is inviting applications from qualified candidates at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor level for a full-time, open tenure earning position through the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine. This position will work across campus for clinical work requiring bioinformatics expertise

The Bioinformatician will be part of a growing team responsible for research and clinical information services for the department. Based in the Division of Genomic Diagnostics & Bioinformatics (GDB), this individual will provide leadership to help drive key strategic growth initiatives within the Department of Pathology and across the UAB Enterprise.

The candidate must have an M.D. or Ph.D. in relevant disciplines with demonstrative experience in bioinformatics. Ph.D. candidates should have a strong background in research setting and be willing to contribute to work done to support both research and clinical informatics initiatives. Experience requirements will be evaluated. Demonstrated success and experience in a range of information technology roles in the aligned healthcare and biomedical research industries, including proven successes implementing IT systems, large-scale bioinformatics analyses, complex computational informatics analyses, and/or development and implementation of major analytical workflows to support clinical and research genomic data analysis is required. Experience or commitment to increasing customer satisfaction, implementing new technologies, fiscal management, and quality are expected. The candidate should have excellent communication and collaborative skills and will work closely with our growing GDB faculty team and across departments, centers and schools to lead research and clinical informatics support. Salary, rank, and tenure- status are commensurate with experience and background. This is an outstanding leadership opportunity for expanding bioinformatics in the GDB.

It is expected that the Bioinformatician will secure funding to help support a significant portion of their salary by obtaining individual funding or through collaborative research with other UAB faculty.

As part of the leadership team, the Bioinformatician will work closely with GDB, Pathology, and UAB Hospital administrative leadership to create programs, develop business plans, and establish policies that support UAB’s strategic objectives. The Bioinformatician is responsible for supporting all research and clinical informatics operations under the GDB and within Pathology. The Bioinformatician contributes to the leadership, vision, support and oversight for the GDB research and clinical informatics team and is responsible for directing and coordinating its research and clinical informatics functions. The Bioinformatician will be a key contributor to technology-related decisions and ensure superior client and patient satisfaction. The Bioinformatician will develop strong relationships and trust with faculty, physicians and leaders of the UAB research and health systems. The Bioinformatician will ensure that the GDB information systems and information technology strategies are aligned with UAB’s mission and values.
